Level III Punishment
North Carolina penalizes DWIs based on one of six sentencing levels. Each level has its own set of penalties that must be imposed if the criteria for sentencing are met.
Level III penalties include:
- A jail sentence of three days to six months
- A maximum fine of $1,000
If the judge suspends the jail sentence, you will be ordered to:
- Serve 72 hours in jail
- Perform 72 hours of community service within a time determined by the judge
- Any combination of these two
It is possible that the judge will also order probation after your sentence has been served. If this happens in your case, you will be required to submit to a substance abuse assessment and complete any recommended treatment and/or education.
